Bierzo Blanco La Del Vivo La Vizcaina Vinos 2014
From super-star winemaker Raul Perez, this truly fantastic white will rock your world. Reminiscent (actually a dead on ringer), of a great Grand Cru Chablis or a Meursault Perrieres, with soaring aromas of flint, wet stones, lechee nut, and Asian pear. On the palate, it is very much like a 2014 white Burgundy, with fabulous transparency, terroir character, old vine intensity, tension, saltiness and a bevy of minerals. The balance is absolutely perfect, clocking at 13.5% alcohol and with laser definition, held together by bright, briny acidity. Textured, refined, medium bodied, and a 2-3 minutes finish that is to die for. Incredible match to Sardines, Chilean sea bass, and other oily fish, or cheese, of course.
The wine is made of Godello and Dona Blanca. The wine is sourced from two vineyards, La Poulosa (planted 1940) & Las Villegas (planted 1925), aggregate 1.5 ha, in the village of Valtuille de Abajo. The vineyard La Poulosa is clay soils, while Las Villegas is sandy soils. The grapes are divided into two parts. Approximately 80% of the grapes are pressed and decanted, then fermented in 500-liter and 700-liter French barrels. That wine remains untouched in the barrels for one year. The remaining 20% of the grapes ferment with skins in clay amphorae where the wine then remains untouched for one year. The two parts are then blended and the wine is bottled without fining or filtration.
